Services
Treatment of acquired speech, language and swallowing difficulties.
You may develop communication and/or swallowing difficulties due to an acute event such as a stroke or due to a progressive neurological condition.
Communication difficulties can include:
Aphasia: Aphasia is a language difficulty that can affect talking, understanding, reading and/or writing. Aphasia is mostly commonly caused by stroke. Approximately 1 in 3 people will develop aphasia after a stroke and 60% of these people will continue to have aphasia a year later.
Dysarthria: Dysarthria is a speech difficulty which occurs when the muscles used for speech are weak or there is difficulty controlling them. Speech can sound slurred or slow and can be hard to understand. It has been reported that 89% of people with Parkinson's experience speech and voice disorders and this impacts their participation and confidence in social settings (Parkinson's Foundation).
Apraxia of speech (AOS): Apraxia of speech is another difficulty with speech but due to difficulty planning and coordinating the sounds to speak fluently. It can be very effortful to get speech out or say words correctly.
Cognitive-communication difficulties: These are communication difficulties primarily due to difficulty with one or more areas of cognition such as memory, problem solving, insight and executive function. These types of difficulties may occur after a stroke, especially a stroke affecting the right side of the brain, or a traumatic brain injury. They can also develop in dementia and other degenerative diseases.
Using evidence-based treatment as well as years of experience, Karli will work with you and your loved ones to help improve your communication difficulties and meet your needs and goals.
Dysphagia: You may also experience dysphagia after a stroke or it may develop due to a progressive neurological disease. Dysphagia is a swallowing difficulty where you have difficulty efficiently or safely moving food and drink from your mouth to your stomach. Difficulty swallowing can affect your nutrition and/or respiratory health. If you have these difficulties Karli can also assess your swallowing and provide intervention to maximise your abilities and safety.
